The Opportunities and Challenges of ICD-10: On January 16, 2009, the United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) published a rule to adopt the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-10-CM) for coding diagnoses, and Procedure Coding System (ICD-10-PCS) for coding inpatient hospital procedures, which replace the Ninth Revision (ICD-9).
